Netflix & Windows 10…

Dear Reader,

I recently updated my laptop to Windows 10, having very decent guts on it, I did not expect much of a change in performance, as on Windows 8.1 I was doing good. All was well, until, I began to notice, it was hanging on Netflix. Having no issues with other streaming sites like Youtube or Pandora, I figured it’s probably heavy online traffic to the site. It wasn’t

Today though, it got worse, I mean audio, video synch issues, and crashing on every browser I tried it on (3 of them to be exact) but to the point where my machine was so frozen I could not get it to shut down.

I began to debug after reporting the issue to Netflix, who were kind enough to inform me, they had an app for that. Naturally, I had no idea, because, hello, I have never owned a Windows phone, and Windows 8.1 was basically a giant Windows Phone, from what I been told, worse than Vista in my opinion.

So I ran anti virus software thinking it might be a worm or something. Nothing, all was well. I restarted the laptop more times than I care to count, and still no fix.

So then, I thought maybe it’s a windows update thing. Which, I had not considered before since, all apps, updated once Windows 10 was installed. Plus, I saw no notifications, that there were updates or restart to update cues anywhere.

So I went down to Notifications which looks like a chat bubble next to the clock on Windows 10 expanded menu, and went to All Settings, then there was a bunch of square icons one of them says Update and Security, and the first thing it showed was the Windows Update Tab, there I saw a cumulative update, set to install at 3 AM, I had no idea, as before on the previous system if anything was waiting a simple restart would get it going.

Contrary what I thought there was no cue for “Install all”, there was simply a button that said Restart. I found that redundant since I had restarted before, but did it anyway since I ran out of options.

Presto, it ran the update and my laptop went back to working normally. Browser and all. The first thing I did was check Netflix, all issues gone.

Pleasant surprise as this is the first time I see a Windows Update that does indeed improve performance.

So, if you find anything wrong with you system, check Windows Updates, Windows 10 is not perfect yet, more like a work in progress, so far, I’m happy that ridiculous Start Screen is gone.

Galaxies…

Dear Reader,

Did I just paint a picture in your mind of the first space themed movie or TV show you saw or perhaps the last? Or, maybe a simple picture of stars and general outer space?

The truth is galaxies are far more complex than that. Some if not most are extremely unique. In the universe there are two types of galaxies that are most prevalent spiral and elliptical (no I don’t mean the workout machine). Then there’s Hoag’s Object.

Now, according to StarDate.org there are two leading theories on how galaxies first came to be. Yes, we would like to think that after the Big Bang the dust settled and space was as we know it today, but in reality, nothing was that instant. About a billion years after The Big Bang, (quite a long time folks) the first galaxies were born. A galaxy’s birth is far more complicated than the birds and the bees talk we all have had with out parents.  One way that was an “explain it all” way for a while,  was that vast clouds of gas and dust collapsed under their own gravitational pull, allowing stars to form, and presto you got a shiny new galaxy. However, as times must and always will change, mostly due to advances in technology, yet another theory has come out of the wood work, and it has gained popularity. That theory states, that the universe contained many small “lumps” of matter, which clumped together to form galaxies. According to this theory, most of the large galaxies were spirals, that eventually merged and the elliptical galaxies were born.

So what makes Hoag’s Object so rare and unique? Well you see, when two galaxies come together to become an entirely new galaxy it basically becomes a survival of the fittest. It is difficult to imagine something as vast as space can be crowded, but it is, galaxies on their own are huge. Think about it for a minute, The Milky Way Galaxy, a very recognizable name as far as galaxies go, home of our solar system it itself is made up of many other galaxies it has gobbled up over millions of years. It’s nearest neighbor is Andromeda, and it is only 25 times the size of the both galaxies in distance away. That is not enough breathing room. So eventually a collision happens, and only one survives, becoming either spiral or elliptical, except you guessed it Hoag’s Object, this galaxy is unique in that is is both, and to be honest how it came to be so, cannot be explained by science, yet, yes theories abound, but none solid enough.

Now, collisions are not rare, in fact, they happen quite often, it makes one think of space as a gigantic game of Pac-Man. The universe is ever changing and evolving, even though when looking up at the night sky we see the same stars and the same phases of the moon, there is a world of action going on further than the eye can see.

Now with new galaxies being born most of witch are in the elliptical category thus supporting the new theory of creation by collision, one would ask about the stars, what happens to them, do they become further fuel for the crash or what? Well, it is vary rare that stars are scathed during these death matches, more often than not they are thrown out of orbit, they are tossed so far they become residents of a new galaxy or just float in space, this is due to the fact that the distance between stars is so great. Not all, however, is death, destruction and chaos, more often when new galaxies are created, millions of brand new stars are born, thus adding to the grand circle of life.

Yes, we all would like to see space as a very dark and void place to visit, and to the Astronauts that went to the moon, it might have appeared so, but if you look up photos of galaxies far from our own, Space is the most colorful and beautiful canvas of all.

Skype Joy…

Dear Reader,

For the past week, a friend of mine from Mexico, Rudy, has been telling me he would be on Skype, that I should log in, and then we can live chat. Being he, the only MJ fan I know that I can talk to and have fun with sharing stories of MJ’s music news stories and such. I looked forward to it, that and he was going to tell me all about his new boyfriend.

So there I am like a good girl, logged in on Facebook, Skype and Yahoo, from the moment I was awake til I went to bed, which like I put it is pretty much London time. I’m weird like that.  Then I saw a blast from the very recent past log in, and I smiled, because I though right then, “All is well”. I’m not rude or anything, I would have said hello, but I have not exactly heard a reply to any emails I sent a while back, and I don’t know what the social convention is, but I’m pretty sure that is a passive way to say, “Don’t bother me”.

It happened so for 3 nights, and I thought, of how odd it was. I have not logged in to Skype in almost a year maybe more, and the very night I do, There is a person I still consider Martin Status Best Friend. I send good thoughts, smiled and continued reading, building my puzzles or watching “Burn Notice”. A few moments, during the day I thought of Martin, and what it would be like now had he lived to be as old as me. I fancied what it would have been like had he started using email. My guess is, he would have had a blast with Google Image Search, finding the scariest images to try to make me jump off my seat. For some reason scaring the daylights out of me, was always a source of the greatest fun for him.  It was always in good fun though, never cruel, the times he tried scaring me in school were awesome we always ended up laughing afterward. Often times I see videos like Michael Jackson’s Ghosts and think, he would have had a blast with it, because it had good special effects, talking parts and music, he often said, he could moonwalk in his chair just like MJ.

Like my mother told me when he died more than 13 years ago. “Don’t be sad that he is gone, be happy that you got to know him”. I gotta say, she is right. Still, sometimes I do miss his smile, and the way he always made the best of even the worst situation,  Or the look on his face when I ate super hot sauce with my lunch, he looked at me like he was waiting for me to explode.

As for Rudy he has yet, to log in. It’s all good, I don’t think he likes Skype much anyway, still, Skype did make me smile, so win win situation.Until my next post remember, it may not always be an easy thing to be happy, but it sure is the most fun of all of them.

Ruby Red…

Dear Reader,

I like my games pretty, but more than that I love my game accessories to be pretty too. I am  a girl after all. Yesterday, I found myself dancing around my living room, but this time for much more different reason than I did three years ago.  Last night I was surprised by this:

360-Yummy

I’ve played ever installment of the Diablo franchise so far. Last year, I was heart broken to find they were releasing Diablo 3 for PC. Now my PC is not bad, but it’s not close to the gaming beast I had three years ago. Then yesterday, as I was going about my day finally putting the finishing touches in my apartment. (It looked like Hurricane Andrew hit it with force). Now it looks like a vacation home you see in a magazine. A place for everything and everything in it’s place. I was feeling really good, my first victory in a while well second one if you count the Chicken for a few days ago. So I was feeling good. Dancing around to MJ music in my living room and losing myself in the thoughts of what made me happy 3 years ago. It was a good day. Then, this arrived.

It’s a little known fact unless you know me. I’m a HUGE fan of Coca-Cola, I love it the brand the color of the can and the soda. So that controller is the most awesome thing I’ve seen so far. So this perfect day, got even better when attached to all this awesome was an order of Panda Express, and an ice cold Coca-Cola. Oh yes, there is balance in the world.

This arrived for me yesterday. Now that the dust has settled I asked, “What’s this for, it’s not Christmas or my Birthday”. Answer, “Because as you always say great things happen today. Also, your reaction a moment ago was priceless” That in a nutshell was the reason. In all seriousness, I think I been too sad lately, so it was an attempt to see me smile. Well, it worked!

Yesterday, has gone and passed, and silence is still in the air. Oh well off to kill Diablo’s minions until the planet align again if they ever do.

Stay positive, live, dream dream big. There will always be dreams, as long as there is someone willing to dream them. Peace out!

Goodbye Facebook…

Dear Reader,

After years of belonging to Facebook it finally and irreversibly went the way of MySpace.

I realize that while I may seem smart to some, there are still a great many things that elude me. Proper use of Facebook and all that encompasses, is a lesson I learned the hard way.

I am used to losing friends all the time, however, this time it shocked me to the core. I figured maybe I had successfully debated my point and all was well. However, third parties, filibustered until a friendship of nearly 10 years was for all intents and purposes over at least in the digital public eye.

Then there was the case of too much vulgarity among people who are considered far more educated than their words lead on. Let me just say, my hopes for humanity are not shattered but certainly cracked. Facebook, stop being fun and it turned into a nightmare which was best deleted, or as close as one can get to that.

I deleted years of activity. Photos and all. Then I deactivated. No looking back. Boy, the hours I spent of reading recorded activity, it’s insane. I’m almost 31. It’s about time I find a new outlet, and you know what they say, best thing to do is always go back to the beginning. So email it is. Wish me luck!

Mail Delivery…

Dear Reader,

I have no complaints as to where I live, I love it here. It’s small but then again it’s functional, so it works. I can even put up with my neighbors; I figure there is no need to complain, it’s not their fault that our doors are so close together, nor is it their fault that every time they make a phone call they feel they need to stand right outside; speaking Spanish, as though that was privacy enough. Then again, they have no idea that I speak Spanish flawlessly! Maybe it’s because they have yet to grasp the multiple hints I’ve given them, for some people it takes a while to sink in.

There is however, one thing I cannot seem to wrap my head around and it makes me feel as though I lived in the days of the Pony Express, (short lived first attempt at mail delivery). What is that? You might ask, well, it’s my mail delivery. At first it was okay, then one letter failed to arrive, then later another letter, and so on and so forth, ongoing until this day. Now 99 percent of letters, parcels or postcards will be sent back or get lost. With various reasons given such as:  “Undeliverable as addressed”, “Address does not exist” among others. Yes, you read correctly, “Address does not exist.” I can see my address on Google Maps, I can get directions to and from it to somewhere else, yet the U.S. Postal Service is apparently oblivious to it.

In recent years, I was contemplating the future of mail delivery. With everything going digital, I often wondered how the post office would fare. Then I saw the rising prices. I am only 30 years old, and in my lifetime mailing a single letter, has gone from$0.29 cents to $0.46. I was not shocked after all, it’s not as common to mail letters today, as it used to be 15 years ago. I suppose they will also continue receiving business from places like Amazon, Ebay, and many others; as they have yet to invent teleportation. So, I guess, they will still have stuff to deliver. However, the more things go digital the more  they are failing at something they should have down to a science by now, after all  they’ve been doing it for over 100 years. It’s not only the U.S. Postal service that fails. It is also the United Parcel Service, then again, it does not surprise me, something about their tracking and delivery is now linked to the U.S. Post Office, so failure is not only expected it’s guaranteed. No doubt, this is a prime example of when working together is a terrible idea. Oh so many companies we have dreamed would someday work together for the greater good or the bigger profit margin, but this pair is definitively not one of them.

Normally I would not care so much about something that is becoming as unused as a telephone book, but it does say somewhere that interfering with the mail is a federal offense. Since my mail, does not even make it to my building before it is returned someone is clearly interfering with it; but I guess such laws do not apply computers, as I’m sure, they will blame all this mess on computer error. To that I say, a computer is only as good as the person in front of it.

Technical Difficulties

Dear Reader,

Today I searched and searched for the answer to a problem I ran into. Thankfully it was isolated to a game and not the entire machine. The game in question is Plants Vs. Zombies. Yes, I’m a sucker for that game. I like simple games that don’t require a huge upgrade to a computer’s video card, or a drain in one’s finances. PvZ offers that.  Plus mindless fun.

So like I’ve done for the past few weeks I was ready for another round of fun. Little did I know I would be facing a Fatal Error. With the words “changedir”.  So like any smart person I searched online on Google opened many a site to find the answer to no avail. However, I am not a person whom is easily deterred from my goals. So after much searching I talked to the other side of my brain. By that I mean my former boyfriend. He and I seem to have this love of everything tech.  I simply described the issue to him and within minutes he asked me to simply add a space after the target address and add the words “-changedir” minus the quotes.  Looked simple enough, and wouldn’t you know it, it works like a charm.

So my question is, could Steam simply write that in their “Fatal Error” window? That could certainly solve a lot of issues and save time in searching online to get nowhere quick.  Maybe is that these days I lack patience or maybe it’s that I just can’t stand things breaking because of an update I had no way of stopping from happening. Either way today I am happy to say, all is in good condition and working.

Hope it all continues that way, though for a few days now, I have had this feeling like someone is going to manage to surprise me and not in a good way.  Well see, how that goes.

One of those days…

Dear Reader,

Maybe it’s because I’m a creature of habit, and I’m very sensitive to when things change, and things must always change. Only a few days ago. I received a really happy offline, that promised a possible chat would be in my future. Well ever since then it’s been strange.  The little interaction seems to be terse and to the point felt almost like an obligation. So… unlike the usual. I guess is just one of those days.

I had one of those days yesterday. It rained like never before with thunder and lighting. If you don’t know by now I’m deadly afraid of thunder and lighting, yet I love rain what a contradiction. So I had to put up that for about 30 minutes, it’s not an exaggeration by any means, it was so bad that car alarms went off every time.

On top of that mom was having issues with something, and I found out another tech issue had taken place with a site, I was to build the stress level was not helping. I’ve had dreams which actually reflect all that stress and just general bad vibe around me lately. One had Hitler in it and the other had rain clouds, and the latest had the Titanic in it. Go figure.

So I guess what just took place this morning should have been no surprise. I know Yahoo has connection issues from time to time, and still I cannot shake the fact that maybe, just maybe, if Yahoo Messenger was a phone, I get the feeling I got hang up on. Then I think, what could be so bad as to deserve hanging up on someone or in my case people logging off mid conversation?  Your guess is as good as mine. So much for really wanting to chat huh? Okay so it was not mid conversation in fact, it was not much of a conversation just a bunch of, “yes, ok”. Then “Yahoo User is Now Offline”.

When I log off on people it’s usually because of a bad day. I hoping the day gets better until then. This girl is going to get some rest and not obsess over things I cannot change, deal with things that do and enjoy all in between.

Hot in Here…

Dear Reader,

Just when we think, things could not get any worse they do. For instance, my air conditioner breaking at exactly four pm yesterday. That was many, many shades of horrible. I been there, done that three or four times. Each time though I manage to retain my sanity for a while longer the last.

This time, I called the front office and try as they did they could not get anyone here in time for my AC to get fixed.  So we spent the night in another unit was an exact replica of mine. Yet no one not even my cats felt comfortable one bit.  Nothing to do but read, and read I did, I got done with most of a Conan Doyle chapter. Awesome stuff. I was about to celebrate, that it had gone better. When I discovered a huge message delay on my Generation One smart phone. To make matters worse auto correct was not doing me any favors. Once I discovered what it said was not at all what I meant to say, I made it part of the conversation, like I meant to type it for a laugh. Talk about wrong thing wrong time.

It all got sorted out just hours ago though. All is right in the world. I wiped my cell back to factory settings so is just a cell phone now, but that is all I need, after all, the convenience of the apps, has proven more trouble than it’s worth.

I did do something for the first time today though, I went to church which is just down the street from me, and to my surprise I was the only person under forty there at that particular time.  I caught the leg end of a service and left.  Something tells me going to church is not as popular as it used to be.

I’m thinking of going again Sunday, but I gather it won’t see much difference. Other than that, I almost played chess with one of the tenants in the lobby, but it’s either the nights ill sleep or the fact the it was hotter than hell, but I was in no mood for games.

Finally the AC got fixed by maintenance turns out no professional was required and the fix took less than ten minutes. You live and learn daily. Now I know what to say next time this happens as it has happened twice it is not a matter of if, but when.

Until that happens I will enjoy the cool AC driven 74 degrees of goodness.

Tech Issues…

Dear Reader,

What better way to celebrate the birth of the world wide web, than to spend and entire day fighting it.  Okay so it was not the web I was fighting exactly, but it’s it’s results after it’s put in the hands of people who don’t know what they are doing, though they would gladly disagree.

So after a pleasant breakfast that I paid for, my mother drops the bomb on me. Her machine had tons of software that was not there before because she wanted to play “Collapse”.

Now, it was not my mother that I was insulting.  I want to think that I’ve taught her better than that. I even have her machine working so as to prevent stupid rookie mistakes.  No, I had another culprit in mind.  My now 14 year old nephew. Who’s only contribution to my life has been disappointment and disrespect. Not only for my self, but his parents and mine.

It turns out my mother wanted in fact to play “Collapse” and what I can only assume was met by haughty over assurance of actual brain cells at work, she blindly trusted him to install, things that had nothing to do with games, nor any useful software.

I tried to impress on my mother the importance of safety online, and also begged for her to tell me the truth.  In my quest for the truth I was met with her taking the blame for it all, and my sister’s back up of “Don’t even look at my son”.

They of course fail to notice that while I admit, I am not a computer genius, there was way too much evidence on that hard drive that pointed to only one person. Of course my sister treated me like I was invisible, and wrong about her son’s deed. There is no blinder man than the one that refuses to see.  Her body language and attitude hurt, and still do. I was right and she was wrong. Who did mom side with. Her of course.

I don’t mind people treating me like I’m invisible, but somehow, I never expect such a thing from someone who is suppose to lead by example.

I guess they are just lucky I don’t charge for my services, because if I did, they couldn’t afford me.  I of course, solved the issue and as far as I know, the computer is up and running like nothing happened. Good for them.  I will go back to being invisible, that is until something else needs my touch.
