I am not sure if you are aware of this but teen pregnancy is at an all time low. Oh yes, the record is held by the generation born between 1972 and 1976 back in 1991 this generation was having children at the rate of 61.8 for every 1000 females. Most multiple births before the age of 18. So why I wonder on every story I read of another pregnant teen the general consensus seems to agree that teens today see having a baby as a rite of passage. Considering the most recent numbers being down by more than half, I should think it’s all the opposite.
Yet, there are still a myriad of stories regarding schools making headlines for attempting and in some cases succeeding in banning visibly pregnant teen photos from appearing in the yearbook. Please note the words visibly pregnant, most everyone jumps in the crucifixion bandwagon and happily glazes over the words visibly pregnant. I can understand the school officials not wanting to send the wrong message that teen pregnancy is no big deal, that it has no consequences and sets a bad example for other students. However, if they take this step with teen mothers to be, then my only question is why, oh why not take the same steps with teen fathers and school bullies? In the case of teen fathers, have we forgotten it takes two to make a child? In the case of bullies, I personally think bullies set a far worse example on their peers; in some cases they scar their victims for life. Yet if we are to open a yearbook at any given point since they became a thing, we will find them filled with pages of teen fathers and school tormentors. Rarely do we find more than one photo of that kid, who lacked social graces or parents that could buy their children the social standing by means of money or popularity by association.
These cases of students being banned from school functions or yearbooks because of their clothes, sexual orientation in some cases, or even because they are visibly pregnant usually get headlines and end in litigation, citing the First Amendment in most of the cases. Yet, I don’t see a story anywhere, where students litigate over far more important matters such as the quality of their education, the extreme shortage of books, the conditions in the classrooms, the lack of well trained teachers among so many others. What is quite clear is that teens as much as school officials care more about appearance than anything else. It’s sad really, but there it is.
Sometimes, we go about our day, maybe we notice the leaves changing or the wind picking up speed. However, if you are like me, you don’t really expect to go noticed as you walk by on your day to day.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those sit in your room and cry types. I am perfectly comfortable with myself and I do realize, that I am not the type of person that gets noticed. I blend into the background of life as it were and I’m okay with that.
Today, as I walked to the laundry room, I took a moment to smell the air, to enjoy the fact that Spring, however windy is here. Since I was early I was not surprised to find the lady that takes care of the laundry room cleaning, and since she did not mind my presence I went on about putting my laundry to dry. She then comented in more length, that I looked smaller. So in her own way she seemed happy with my weight loss. Congratulated me on it, she said, “It shows, you loss weight, keep with your morning walks it’s doing you good”. She noticed I take walks in the morning. So much for blending into the fabric of daily life.
It’s been a while since I gotten a compliment from someone I don’t really know. It was unexpected and surprising. Most people compliment you because it’s the right thing to do, or because somehow, they have to to, or they do it simply out of pity. I am not one to give many compliments, but when I do compliment someone is heart felt and sincere.
I took the time to tell this lady, how much it meant to me that she took the time to say something nice. My exact words were, “Thank you, you have given me a very good reason to smile today. May your day be filled with as much joy as you brought into mine”.
Maybe, a bit too much, for most, but given the fact that I have been under the weather lately, and not exactly feeling pretty. She did honestly give me something to smile about. It’s the little things that can make a big difference.
So in closing, be grateful for the little things that make you smile. They are they to remind you that as bad as things can get, they will get better.
First of all Happy New Year. I’ve had a very eventful last two weeks of the year. As it happens with holidays, it is a time to see family and wish them the best. I visited Mom about three nights in a row, met with her as she welcomed my uncle to the Valley and sadly also saw the ugly face that lack of patience and understanding brings, to put it simply, I witnessed people people acting as I never thought they would. All due to stubbornness and miscommunication, still, you would think adults would be a little more classy.
Mom, she is my hero, she cooked yummy food and brought a smile to my sick face, and I do mean the word sick literally. I been feeling like I’m at death’s door for about 12 days now. The influenza virus is serious and it hit me with the force of 1000 horses. Still feeling run down today, but I have hopes I will feel better soon.
Still, I have high hopes, high chocolate cake in the sky hopes. (Bet you thought I would say Apple Pie. I’m not an apple pie kind of person so Chocolate Cake yum is my thing.
Yesterday two hours before the end of 2013, someone wished me Happy New Year, apparently this person has texted my mobile before. So he or she remembered me and Wished me a Happy New Year.
It was a happy out of left field type thing. It gives me a smile and hope that soon my health will improve.
Until next time though. May all your wishes come true. It’s a new year, may it be filled with joy and happiness and lots of chocolate cake. (yeah, I really, really want a chocolate cake). Still the sentiment is there. Think fondly of people who are or were at one point a part of your life. Send happy thoughts the world around. Focus this new year, in the horizon of your destiny and may it be a fun ride.
This will be a year to surely remember. Although is not quite over yet, I have a load of memories that I will cherish for years to come. This year I have seen people come and go, and in the world of my dreams have had some really messed up ones out of left field, but far more beautiful ones.
All in all I’m very peaceful. I finally got to work on a blanket I started years ago. I had no idea what to do with it, then my mom suggested I keep it around to keep adding to it as time goes on. I’ve always said, great minds think alike, well not so far back I got a similar suggestion, so having two confirmations I think the blanket will stay, maybe every time I reach a goal, I will add another line or two. As far as how it will look in a few years, I”m sure Nolan’s claws will have something to do with it, but that dude is so adorable I cannot be mad if it looks like a crazy mess.
In the mean time here is hoping the remainder of the year is as wonderful as the past few months have been.
Joy to the world indeed!
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word “Frankenstein”? If you are like most of us you probably think of a ghoul with bolts on his neck. Recently, my friend Mickey stopped by for a visit, and spoke of scars he received compliments of a cat. Being October I thought to reply to his comments by saying, “Oh you looked like Frankenstein”. A light bulb went off in his head, and he said finally. “Frankenstein or Frankenstein’s Monster”. He felt like he had won one, against me. Just like old times, I quickly said, “I meant Frankenstein, not Victor Frankenstein, I would have dropped the last name and called you Victor if that is what I meant.”
My reasoning behind that which I explained to him, actually impressed him very much. Secretly I was happy to have impressed someone I have known for so long. Now, my reasoning, behind my response, was not a defense of, well everyone calls him that. Far simpler than that. In Mary Shelly’s book, Frankenstein’s creation has no name, and is simply referred to as “it, monster, creature, or the Adam of your labors”. He has no official name. So, I explained to him, that in China, children are named by their parents, “Last name first”. Since Frankenstein’s creation was created by him, well it was only fair. He was impressed. After he left, I thought more about this. Then, thought of all the babies in the hospitals that have yet to be named, they are called “Last Name, baby”. So, in my mind Victor Frankenstein’s creation should be called Frankenstein to know where he comes from and not given a first name his last name becomes his first and last identity.
So with that, ends that argument of what to call him. Of course, you can always call him Frankenstein’s monster. However, that would make him property, and we don’t want to open that can of worms. So let’s stick to the tried and true.
Ever been on the phone with someone and you get put on hold? Then it’s endless minutes of elevator music or just dead air. Well that happened to me almost a week ago, mom was walking around the house, and doing a lot of things at once. She thought she had placed me on hold, but missed the button by a mile. It was then that I heard something extremely hurtful. Not that I have not heard my sister put her foot in her mouth before, but this time, it really hurt.
She said the most awful things about me, I mean, don’t get me wrong, I am fully aware I am not the most stellar individual, however, I am not overall a rotten apple to the core. Well, she also expressed similar thoughts about mother as I later found out.
So you see when it rains, it really pours, today for instance I found out I was added to the restricted section of Facebook. You know that amazing little bit of technology that allows you to have friends on Facebook, yet they can only read what you made specifically public. Ah yes, I am on that list. Here I am, just in a small way wondering why. I mean, I did express my opinion and while it was not a good opinion, it landed me in the penalty box so to speak. The weird thing is, I thought all was well and all the bridges mended and apologies accepted and what not. So if that is, then what was this for? Don’t worry I don’t need an answer to that one. I kindda gotten used to things like that, they have happened 3 times before. First with Jane Doe, then someone named Sarah, long story short. Like immunity. The first time you get a cold, you hurt everywhere and feel like you got run over, the second time slightly less so, by the 3rd time you pretty much only notice the runny nose.
That is the life of me, people can treat me like I’m the bad guy, and want to make me pay for it, but when they fail, I don’t even ask the basic question of “Why?”. In my sister’s case, we are related and eventually will have to see each other again and act as civil as possible, in other people’s case, I really don’t know. I am a fan of finding answers, but in the most latest case of having things turned upside down when I thought all was well, AGAIN, I think I will let these questions go. I often said good friendships relationships are worth fighting for, but even the Titanic eventually sank to the bottom of the Atlantic.
Until next time remember this: “You maybe one person, but for one person you can hold the world entire”
I was suppose to have visitors to my house today. Mom and other family members were to drop by so we could spend the day together, but somehow, it all fell through, and of course I was left waiting needlessly. My mother got so busy she forgot to call and cancel all plans. Totally not cool.
Maybe it’s Karma, but nothing seems to be going right these past two months. See told you I’m not a nice person. Oh well as they say, “this too shall pass”. As usual mom read my past entry and spend a good part of the late afternoon reminding me I have more friends.
So let me clarify. I have one Ultimate friend, you know the one person I would trust with my deepest darkest secrets and such. Then I have Old Friends, those that if they call you ten years later is like time has not passed. Then there is the regular friends, of those I have quite a few, in fact, about five. Then there is people I just know. I had to explain that to mom, she think anyone that you known for a long time is a friend all others just people you know. My sophisticated categorizing was too much for her.
So with that being said, the visit of today went south quick. I’m not exactly sad about it, as I am not quite comfortable entertaining guests. I can deal with one person two max at a time but the four or five would drown me if the expression fits.
On the update for today, even though I’m not exactly one with nature, I’ve gone out again, it’s becoming quite a habit, I almost memorized the layout of my complex go me.
To answer the random question of my past entry, I should say if I could see anything of space the sky and such, it would have to be the Northern Lights, or a similar thing over Alaska, that would be marvelous.
Now for the random question of today:
What is your ultimately favorite smell?
Oh I also came up with a new thing of the day. The phrase of the day. Did you know that everyday you hear something that makes an impact, makes you laugh or you just tend to remember said thing longer? Well, in this case the phrase of the day or rather quote of the day comes from me.
“Without further ado”
I guess I should explain huh? Well you see, today I made someone laugh, when I said it, it was during a phone call. I know the phrase was not invented my moi, but it’s something I said, it made someone’s day.
Remember no matter how dark your days, the sun is bound to rise again someday, so keep your head up and smile.
